The White House on 16 November said that United States President Donald Trump believes the allegations of sexual misconduct against former Alabama Chief Justice and US Senate candidate Roy Moore are 'very troubling' and should be taken seriously.

"The President believes that these allegations are very troubling and should be taken seriously, and he thinks that the people of Alabama should make the decision on who their next senator should be," White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said, in response to a question during the press briefing.

She also recalled the President's earlier statement in which he had said that if the allegations were true, then Moore should step aside.

US House Speaker Paul Ryan had dubbed the sexual misconduct allegations against Moore as "credible", calling on the latter to step aside from the race.

"He should step aside. Number one, these allegations are credible. Number two, if he cares about the values that he claims to care about, then he should step aside," CNN had quoted Ryan, as saying.

Apart from Ryan, a number of other Republicans have voiced against Moore and have asked him step down. Some even suggested to expel Moore from the Senate should he win the December 12 special election.

This came after some women stepped forward, saying Moore pursued relationships with them when they were teenagers.

However, Moore has flatly denied the allegations levelled against him.
