Speed News Desk | Updated on: 14 February 2017, 5:51 IST

In the third attack near the Indian consulate in Afghanistan's Jalalabad this year, a grenade was reportedly thrown into the compound of the consulate in the eastern Afghan city.

Explosions and gunfire have been reported and Afghanistan officials have confirmed that the consulate was the target of the attack.

All Indians are reported to be safe and no deaths have been reported so far.

The blast reportedly shattered windows and doors in nearby buildings. News agencies quoted eyewitnesses as saying that at least eight cars were damaged in the attack.

Growing number of attacks?

  • On 12 January, seven people were killed and two injured after a suicide bomber blew himself up near the Pakistan consulate - which is in the same area.
  • On 5 January, an explosion took place 400 metres away from the Indian consulate in Jalalabad.

  • On 20 December 2015, security forces thwarted a suicide bomb attack on the Indian consulate.
