  • Attack on Indian consulate in Jalalabad city early Wednesday morning
  • A suicide bomber detonated a car bomb outside consulate gates, as three others raised attacks towards consulate
  • All insurgents neutralised by Afghan National Security Forces; clearance operations underway
  • All staff at the Indian consulate are safe

Two heavy explosions were heard near the Indian consulate in Jalalabad, early Wednesday morning.

All four insurgents involved have been killed, and clearing operations are currently underway, an Indian embassy official confirmed to Catch News. "All staff members at the consulate are safe," he assured.

Initial media reports claimed that a vehicle carrying four people arrived near the consulate. The car, loaded with explosives, was detonated near the gate by one militant. The rest of insurgents launched an attack on the Indian consulate, Afghan journalist Bilal Sarwary reported on Twitter.

Dues to the proximity of the two consulates, earlier reports mistook the attack to be against the Pakistani consulate, since a similar attack against them took place in January this year, killing seven civilians.

An eyewitness close to the scene have told Catch News that they heard two explosions, and several gunshots. While reports confirm that at least 14 civilians have injured the eyewitness reports to have seen many more casualties. At least, two among the injured are children. The consulates are located close to a girls school called Tajrobawee Girls School.

Indian interests in Afghanistan have come under server attacks in the recent months. Earlier this year, Indian consulate in Mazar-i-sharif had come under a similar attack, in a gun battle that lasted nearly 25 hours with the help of national security forces as well as the governor of Balkh himself.
