1 killed, 5 injured in London knife attack. Suspect detained

One woman was killed and five others injured in a knife attack in Russel Square in Central London.

The London Metropolitan Police has confirmed that one suspect has been detained.

Police reported to the scene of the attack, after receiving calls at about 10:33 pm on 3 August about a man brandishing a knife and injuring people.

The suspect was brought into police custody after being tasered by police officials.

Delhi HC rules in favour of Centre in Delhi governance tussle

The Delhi High Court on 4 August ruled that Lt Governor Najeeb Jung is the administrative head of National Capital Territory.

The Delhi High court ruled in favour of the Centre in the legal tussle between the Delhi government and the Centre over the control of administrative issues and distribution of power in the capital.

The High Court pronounced the verdict on a set of 11 petitions challenging various decisions of the Aam Aadmi Party led Delhi government and Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung and the interpretation of Article 239AA of the Constitution.

The Delhi government will now take the legal battle to the Supreme Court.

Rajnath Singh greeted with protest as he arrives in Islamabad for Saarc meet

Home Minister Rajnath Singh arrived in Islamabad on 3 August, amid protests by Hizbul Mujahideen commander Syed Salahuddin and other militants.

Singh is in Pakistan for a two-day visit during which he will attend the SAARC ministerial conference.

During his visit, Singh is expected to discuss issues including the Pathankot terror strike in January this year and the 26/11 attack. Both India and Pakistan have ruled out bilateral talks.

Former Karnataka Lokayukta Justice Y Bhaskar Rao charged

Former Karnataka Lokayukta Justice Y Bhaskar Rao has been charged with abetting corruption.

On 3 August, an SIT of the Karnataka Police accused the former chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court with extortion, criminal conspiracy, willful abetment and destroying evidence (charges filed under IPC) and for corruption under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Rao's son is currently awaiting trial in jail in connection with the extortion racket. Rao stepped down as the Lokayukta on 7 December 2015.

BJP calls Mayawati 'Daulat ki Beti', says she won't benefit from instigating Dalits

After Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati visited Ahmedabad to meet the four Dalit boys who were attacked by cow vigilantes last week, the BJP took took digs at her, referring to her as 'Daulat Ki Beti', and saying that she will not be able to reap any benefits by instigating the Dalit community.

"Mayawati ji can go anywhere in the nation but she is not going to Bihar where the police baton charged the Dalits. They were beaten up by the order of the administration. The one who became 'Daulat ki Beti' won't gain anything by instigating the Dalits, where they are getting full justice. The 'Daulat Ki Beti' would soon get exposed," BJP leader Prem Shukla told ANI.

Shukla's comment came in the wake of Mayawati's visit to Ahmedabad to meet the victims who were earlier on July 11 beaten up at Mota Samadhiyala village of Una taluka in Gir-Somnath district of Gujarat by a group of cow vigilantes for skinning a dead cow.

Two bodies recovered at Raigad bridge collapse site

Two bodies were recovered on the morning of 4 August as search and rescue operations resumed at site where the bridge across Savitri river bridge in Raigad collapsed on 3 August.

Around ten vehicles, including two buses, fell into the river when it collapsed. Authorities estimate that around 30 people are till missing. Rescue operations have been hit by the incessant rains and the flooding of the river Savitri.

US grants private co permission to land on moon, 1st time ever

The United States of America has given the first permission for a private company to land on the moon. Florida-based Moon Express had sought permission to land an unmanned vehicle on moon in 2017. The suitcase-sized vehicle will spend a fortnight on moon, reported Reuters. What's more, the Moon Express will carry human cremated remains, besides scientific experiments. This is the first ever non-governmental mission to be allowed outside the earth's orbit. The next is likely to be entrepreneur and Tesla founder Elon Musk's plan to have a mission fly to mars, expected in 2018.

Scientists claim to have solved question of Woolly Mammoth's extinction

Mammoths, the giant elephant-ancestors we're familiar with in Ice Age than otherwise, may have died away of thirst. The last of the Woolly Mammoths, who lived on St Paul Island near Alaska for about 5 millenia more than the ones in North American and Asian, eventually perished due to saltwater intrusion and warming climate. By using sediments from an ancient lake from an island, as well as DNA and fungi samples, scientists concluded that there was a lack of water that lead to Mammoth deaths.

Drink energy drinks often? A 28-yr old just got heart problems because of it

A 28-year old man reported irregular heartbeat after months of drinking alcohol and two energy drinks a day. Although the links aren't scientifically established yet, the case adds to a series of cases of healthy youngsters having heart issues - including lethal heart attacks - after consuming energy drinks that are loaded with caffeine. In fact, between 2004-12, the US' Food and Drugs Administration received 40 such reports. Previously, studies have showed relation between these drinks and high blood pressure.

Multiple environmental records were broken in 2015

These exceptional phenomena were caused by rising greenhouse gas emissions as well as the strong El Nino - a climate phenomenon that causes warming of in parts of the Pacific Ocean with climatic changes worldwide.

Miami first town in the USA with a Zika scare

Miami, the beach town in the US state of Florida is under the scare of Zika. The city is on high alert for Zika transmission from Latin America, causing widespread anxiety especially among pregnant mothers, reports Reuters. There are 15 confirmed cases in Miami, with authorities monitoring 391 cases supposed to have transmitted the disease abroad. However, scientists say that the 'outbreak' is likely to remains localised, thanks to widespread use of air conditioning and sealed windows.

Lok Sabha tables Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill, 2016

The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill, 2016 was introduced in Lok Sabha on 2 August.

The bill allows a transgender person to identify themselves as man, woman or transgender, while doing away with the 'Other' category.

The Bill protects transgenders from discrimination in education, employment, and the right to rent or buy property. The Bill also seeks to establish a health care system for transgenders - including insurance schemes and seperarte HIV sero-surveillance centers.

Nepalese woman allegedly gangraped in east Delhi

A 22-year-old Nepalese woman was allegedly gangraped by three persons on the pretext of landing her a lucrative job in Ashok Nagar area in east Delhi. One of the accused has been arrested, police said on 3 August.

The three forced her to drink alcohol and raped her, a senior police officer said.

Following a complaint, the victim was sent for a medical examination and an FIR was registered, he said. The police are on the lookout for the other two accused.
