Classmates in southwest Delhi beat 15-year-old to death

A 15-year-old boy was allegedly beaten to death by two of his classmates after he complained against them to a teacher. This happened at south-west Delhi's Najafgarh area, police said on 24 August. All three were students of class nine in a private school. The incident was reported around 6 PM on 23 August. The two classmates called the victim near a vacant plot in the area on the pretext of cycling and upon his arrival, beat him to death with wooden sticks. The two classmates were reported by the victim, a class monitor, following which they were punished. Reportedly, the two accused "held grudge" against him.

India will pay greater attention to West Asia, North Africa: Sushma Swaraj

During her first trip to Egypt, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said that West Asia and North Africa are growing in significance for India's national interests. She added that India will now pay greater attention to the region. This will be done by seeking closer cooperation and stronger partnership. Swaraj said that the India Business Forum has been created as a platform to promote Brand India and leverage the business interests of all Indian companies here. "This region in the Gulf and in the West Asia and North Africa is growing in significance from the perspective of our national interests. Not only is this area home to 7 million Indians but is also crucial for our energy security, resources, and indeed our national security," Swaraj said.

Arvind Kejriwal to meet Narendra Modi on 25 August, talk on ties

On the back of Arvind Kejriwal's accusation that Delhi Police and lieutenant governor Najeeb Jung have been harassing the Delhi government at the behest of BJP, the interaction between him and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 25 August will revolve around the ongoing crisis between the state and the Centre. Kejriwal has been trying to get an appointment with the "out of town" Prime Minister Narendra Modi for quite sometime and was finally given an appointment on 25 August. Kejriwal has accused Modi of taking revenge on Delhi after BJP's big loss in the 2015 assembly elections and added that he is specifically targeting the Delhi Chief Minister.

PM Modi reviewed stock, currency situation; keen to strengthen economy: Jaitley

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 24 August, reviewed the situation and favoured pushing ahead with the reforms agenda and taking more steps to strengthen the economy. Arun Jaitley, Finance Minister, told ministers that Narendra Modi took stock of equity and currency markets and took a view that "our economy is stable" but reiterated the fact that there is more to be done. Jaitley added that there will be no change in the stratergy and the initiative to attract investors would continue.

After a nightmare day in the stock markets worldwide, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 588.40 points at the end of the day to end at 15,871.35. This comes after the Indian stock market fell the most on Monday since 2008. investors lost nearly Rs. 7 lakh crore. The fall in the stock markets was because fears of a Chinese economic slowdown continue to haunt investors. China's central bank devalued yuan, the country's currency, two weeks ago. This raised fresh concerns that a slowdown in the country's economy was worse than originally feared. The Shanghai composite index tumbled 8.5%, entering negative territory for the year.

Rupee strengthens, recovers 26 paise against dollar in early trade

The rupee recovered by 26 paise to 66.39 against the dollar at the Interbank Foreign Exchange in early trade on 25 August on fresh selling of the US currency by banks and exporters. Dealers said fresh selling of the US currency by exporters and banks, and weakening of dollar overseas supported the domestic currency.

Gains in stock markets also helped rupee strengthen against the dollar, they added. The rupee had tumbled sharply by 82 paise, its biggest single day fall this year, to settle at 66.65 against the dollar on 24 August as global meltdown fears remained unabated.

The widespread panic sell-off in Chinese equities predominantly tipped emerging market currencies into turmoil even as the US dollar weakened overseas. Meanwhile, the benchmark BSE Sensex on 25 August regained the 26,000-mark by rebounding 383.27 points, or 1.48 per cent, to trade at 26,124.83 in opening trade.

PM might announce OROP on 28 August - golden jubilee of 1965 war

Amid reports of another ex-servicemen on fast unto death demanding the implement ion of One-Rank-One-Pension policy taking ill, India Today reported that Prime Minister Narendra Modi could make a positive announcement on the issue on 28 August. The day happens to be the golden jubilee of the 1965 war between India and Pakistan.

Earlier veterans had threatened to boycott the celebrations of 50th anniversary of the 1965 war. The channel also reported that another veteran on fast might be hospitalized, while Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar will brief the Prime Minister on the developments.

On 24 August, the OROP row escalated with Colonel (Retired) Pushpender Singh, one of the officers fasting in demand of the immediate implementation of OROP scheme at Jantar Mantar, being hospitalised. It was the ninth day of his fast.

MP, Rajasthan & BBMP poll results complete a hat-trick of wins for BJP, tweets Narendra Modi

The BJP has won the Bangaluru civic polls for the second consecutive year. The final tally stands at 100 seats for 100 seats, down by 16 seats from its numbers last year; the Congress stood at 76 seats, and the Janata Dal (Secular) at 14. In 2010, BJP won 116, Congress 62 wards, and JD (S) 14, and independents won eight seats.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to announce the victory and congratulate party workers for registering third victory after winning the Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan civic polls.

He tweeted: "Thank you Bengaluru! My gratitude to people & congratulations to Karnataka BJP leaders & workers for the great BBMP election results. After MP & Rajasthan, BBMP poll results complete a hat-trick of wins for BJP. This is a win for politics of development & good governance."

In a rare show of strength in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state, scores of people belonging to the Patel community held a massive rally in the state capital on 25 August. The Patels recently started demanding OBC status for the community in Gujarat.

A large number of youths, sporting white caps, attended the rally organised by Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) leader Hardik Patel. After gathering at the GDMC ground, the protestors marched towards the collector's officer. They were met with tear gas and lathi-charge as the police attempted to control the crowd.

The protestors were demanding that CM Anandiben Patel should come to the collector's office and take the memorandum from them detailing their demands

Government cancels exam for 30 peon posts after applications flood in

The Directorate of Economics and Statistics of the Chhattisgarh government, which had scheduled a qualification exam for 30 peon posts, was forced to cancel the exam after it received 75,000 applications for the exam. While the eligibility criterion was just 'class V pass', the department received applications from engineers as well as post-graduates. A decision about the exam will now only be made after a few months due to the large scale of arrangements that need to be made.

Lalita Babar breaks national record to qualify for World Athletic Championship finals

India's middle distance sensation Lalita Babar qualified for the 3000m steeplechase at the World Athletics Championships in Beijing. She finished with a time of 9:27:86, and in doing so bettered broke the national record she'd set herself by more than 6 seconds. Despite her heroics Babar finished fourth in her heats. However, she qualified for the finals by virtue of being one of the 6 fastest women outside of the three fastest in each of the three heats. She is now the first Indian to qualify for the steeplechase finals at the World Athletic Championships. The final will take place on Wednesday.

Everest opens to climbers for the first time since Nepal quakes

Mt. Everest, closed to climbers since the Nepal earthquake in April, is now open to be climbed again. Climbing had been stopped on Everest since the Nepal earthquake triggered an avalanche that flattened part of the Everest base camp. 18 climbers died as a result of the avalanche, with several more injured. The popular spring climbing period was immediately halted as a result. Since the tragedy, the Nepal government has been eager to woo back the thousands of tourists who flock there to trek and climb its mountains.

Over 35,000 died in India due to air pollution in last ten years

The government on 6 August said that more than 35,000 people had died due to acute respiratory infections across India in the last decade. This is in contrast to what the Union environment ministry maintained in the past that there was no "conclusive evidence" that linked air pollution to respiratory diseases. The environment ministry also informed Parliament that over 2.6 crore of such cases were reported every year during the period. Air pollution is known to be one of the aggravating factors for many respiratory ailments and cardiovascular diseases," environment and forest minister Prakash Javadekar stated while sharing the data provided by the health and family welfare ministry.

Odisha HRC seeks report on 21 infant deaths in Cuttack hospital in 4 days

23 children have died, including newborns, in the last four days at the government-run Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Post Graduate Institute of Paediatrics. Following the alarming reports in the media, the Human Rights Commission (HRC) has directed the health secretary, the National Rural Health Mission director, and the superintendent of the Sardar Vallabbhai Patel Post Graduate Institute of Paediatrics in Cuttack to submit a report within three weeks. Parents of the deceased children have attributed the deaths to negligence by doctors, nurses and other hospital staff.

34 kids of Jahangirpuri school fall sick after eating mid-day meal

Thirty-four kids from Sarvodaya Vidyalaya, Block A, Jahangirpuri, fell sick after consuming mid-day meal in school on 24 August. The meal consisted of daal and rice. The kids, from classes six and seven, complained of stomach ache and could be seen vomiting. The government's statement said that the meal arrived at 9:45 AM and was tested at 10:30 AM. By 11:40 AM, some of the 564 kids who ate the meal started complaining of stomach ache. The district-in-charge of the school health centre, Dr. Anoop Nath, was subsequently called in. 24 kids have so far been treated and released while the remaining nine are currently under observation. Samples from the meal have been sent to FICCI's Research and Analysis Centre in Dwarka for further examination.
