Arunachal Pradesh: Congress' Pema Khandu to be sworn in as Chief Minister

With the Congress party succeeding in roping back its rebel members to the party fold by forcing Nabam Tuki to step down, Congress MLA Pema Khandu on 17 July will be sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh at 12 pm.

The much-anticipated floor test in Arunachal Pradesh state Assembly was cancelled after Nabam Tuki resigned as the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader.

Khandu, the son of former chief minister Dorjee Khandu, was elected as the chief of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP).

Qandeel Baloch's brother apprehended by police, says he killed her for bringing dishonour

Late on 16 July, Muhammad Waseem, brother, and suspected murderer of 26-year-old Qandeel Baloch was apprehended by Pakistani police officials. Pakistan's controversial social media celebrity Qandeel Baloch was murdered in cold blood, allegedly by her own kin on 16 July.

Reports suggest that Waseem has owned up to the murder, and justified his actions saying that he killed her for having brought dishonour to the family through her 'bold' social media presence.

Contrary to initial reports that suggested that Baloch was shot dead, investigations have revealed that she was strangled to death.

Vijender Singh wins WBO middleweight title, dedicates win to Mohammed Ali

Indian Boxer Vijendra Singh recorded his 7th consecutive victory by beating Kerry Hope in the WBO Asia-Pacific Super Middleweight title at the Thyagraj Sports Complex in New Delhi on 16 July.

Singh beat Kerry Hope - 98-92, 98-92, 100-90 - to win the super middleweight belt.

Singh, after winning the match, dedicated his maiden title to boxing legend Mohammed Ali who passed away on 3 June this year. Vijender dominated in the first two rounds and made Hope to go into defensive mode; however, Kerry with his resilient knock in the consecutive rounds was constantly evading Singh's penetrative punches.

The final round saw Singh leading with huge advantage come down heavily on Hope.

Daily app downloads in India rose by 16% in first half of 2016: Reports

Daily app downloads in India increased by 16% in the first-half of 2016 (January-June), according to latest data released by 9Apps. Popular third-party app store and part of Alibaba Mobile Business Group reports that 9Apps has reached over 250 million monthly active users around the world.

"According to our statistics, tool, social, media and entertainment, apart from gaming, remain the most popular categories for app downloads. Tools make up about 23 percent of all app downloads; Social about nine percent; Entertainment at seven percent and music is over four percent of all non-gaming app downloads," said Country Manager 9Apps, Ebrahim Popat.

Consumption of gaming apps has increased more than that of non-gaming app. The proportion of games in total app downloads has increased to nearly 20% this year versus 17% in 2015.

UN's World Food Programme needs $610 million for southern Africa drought relief

The United Nations' food agency has said that it needs $730 million to counter the drought crisis in seven southern African nations over the next 12 months.

The World Food Programme (WFP) has said that it is facing a $610 million shortfall in relief for Malawi, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Lesotho, Madagascar, Swaziland and Zambia.

The El Nino pattern has triggered severe drought across the region.
