Hyderabad: Congress leader Yadagiri shot dead in Bowenpally

Congress leader Yadagiri was shot dead in Bowenpally, near Hyderabad, by two unknown assailants on the afternoon of 13 August.

The motorcycle-borne assailants fired six rounds at Yadagiri. An investigation is on in the case. Police suspect that the attack was fuelled by personal rivalry surrounding a land dispute.

Islamic State claims responsibility for second Quetta attack that left 13 injured

On 13 August, the SITE intelligence group declared that the Islamic State (IS) militant group has claimed responsibility for the second terror attack that hit Quetta last week, leaving 13 people injured.

The Dawn quoted SITE's report, which said that the IS claimed the attack on its Telegram channel, al-Bayan Radio and Twitter.

The attack came days after a suicide bombing at a hospital on Monday killed over 70 people, mostly lawyers who had gathered to mourn the death of the president of the Balochistan Bar Association who was gunned earlier in the day.

Rajnath Singh visited Bisra Munda's birthplace to flag-off Zara Yaad Karo Kurbani initiative

Ahead of Independence Day, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh visited the birth place of Birsa Munda at Ulihatu village in Khunti district of Jharkhand on 13 August to pay homage to the freedom fighter.

This is being done under "Zara Yaad Karo Kurbani" programme, under which Union ministers will visit the birthplaces of forgotten heroes and sites of struggles that were part of the country's freedom movement.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi meets PM Modi

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 13 August to discuss issues of mutual interest.

He will also hold bilateral consultations with the External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj. Wang's visit to India is part of the regular high level dialogue between the two countries. Both Foreign Ministers have been meeting regularly on the margins of multilateral meetings.

Bulandshahr gangrape victim moves SC for FIR against Azam Khan

The 14-year-old girl, who was gangraped along with her mother in Bulandshahr on 29 July, has moved to the Supreme Court, seeking protection.

The girl has asked that the case be transferred to Delhi and has requested a court-monitored probe, schooling, security and rehabilitation.

She has also asked that an FIR be filed against UP minister Azam Khan for his comments that the gangrape was a political controversy by opposition leaders.

Defence expert Qamar Agha lauds all-party meet on Kashmir unrest

A day after an all-party meeting took place in New Delhi to discuss the ongoing unrest in Jammu and Kashmir, Defence expert Qamar Agha said on 13 August that it is a good political initiative which will send a positive message in Kashmir.

"The all-party meeting attended by the ruling and the opposition party and the resolution taken on Kashmir by the Lok Sabha yesterday will send out a positive message in Kashmir. These are some good political initiatives which will allow the talks to proceed peacefully," he said.

Protests in Gilgit-Baltistan over Pakistan army crackdown

Protesters have taken to the streets in the Pakistan-occupied Gilgit-Baltistan region, a separate administrative unit in the northernmost administrative territory of Pakistan, against a crackdown by Pakistani security forces that saw incarceration of over 500 young Gilgit residents.

Angry protesters said that these young men were imprisoned for demanding political rights and asking the Pakistani Army to leave Gilgit's soil.

Raising 'anti-Pakistan' slogans, angry protesters took to the streets in Gilgit town, Astore, Diamer and Hunza of the the Gilgit- Baltistan region, which is only Shia-dominated area in Sunni-dominated Pakistan.
