US Open 2015: Top seeds progress to next round

World no. 2 Roger Federer eased into the second round of the US Open on Tuesday, 1 September, with a resounding victory over Argentina's Leonardo Mayer in the first round at Flushing Meadows.

The 17-time major champion overcame Mayer 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 in 77 minutes to progress to the next round.

The Swiss maestro will next lock horns with either Steve Darcis of Belgium or Marcos Baghdatis.

On the other hand, third seed Andy Murray too progressed to the second round after overcoming controversial Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios.

The 28-year-old claimed a 7-5, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 win over Kyrgios in the first-round match, to set up a second round clash with Frenchman Adrian Mannarino.

In other matches, Swiss player Stanislas Wawrinka defeated Albert Ramos 7-5,6-4,7-6(8-6), while Victoria Azarenka, the 20th seed in women's singles, overcame opponent Lucie Hradecka 6-1,6-2 to advance to the next round.

Petra Kvitova, the fifth seed in the women's category, thumped Germany's Laura Siegemund 6-1, 6-1 to
