World no 1 Novak Djokovic and defending champion Marin Cilic are set to face each other in the semis of the US Open, after winning their respective quarter-final matches on Tuesday, 8 September.
Cilic was involved in a pulsating five-setter with Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and managed to come out on top despite a spirited display from his opponent. Cilic grabbed the first two sets 6-4, 6-4, but Tsonga fought back in the third to win it 6-3.
In the fourth set, Tsonga emerged on top courtesy of a tie-breaker to force a deciding set, which Cilic won by six games to four to triumph 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (3), 6-4.
In the late-night encounter between Novak Djokovic and Feliciano Lopez, the former won in four sets, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (2), to stand two wins away from his second US Open title.
Lopez played with an aggressive approach, and managed to trouble Djokovic with his impressive net-play, but the World no 1 eventually managed to dig deep and come out on top in four sets.
