Australian Open: Angelique Kerber stuns Serena Williams to lift women's singles title

Germany's Angelique Kerber created one of the biggest upsets in Australian Open history on Saturday, 30 January, when she defeated World no 1 Serena Williams in the women's singles final to lift the first Grand Slam title of her career.

Kerber started brightly, and broke Serena's serve early on in the first set. The World no 1, however, rallied back and broke Kerber's serve in the sixth game to level up the proceedings.

The seventh seeded player from Germany came straight back and broke Serena's serve in the next game. She then held her next two serves to win the first set 6-4.

Serena Williams looked more composed in the second set, and broke Kerber's serve midway through to win the set 6-3, and take the match to a final set.

In the tense third set, Kerber and Serena broke each other twice in the first 9 games. In the 10th game, Kerber threw the kitchen sink at a visibly-rattled Serena Williams.

The German broke the World no 1's serve after a see-saw battle, to take home the match, and the first major title of her career.

In the process, Kerber became the first tennis player from Germany, across both genders, to win a singles title at a Grand Slam event since Steffi Graf in 1999.
