This app is becoming the Google for refugee search in war-ridden nations

As the number of refugees in Syria and other countries is hitting an all-time high, a mobile app is doing its bit to reunite families.

Danish brothers David and Christopher Mikkelsen launched 'Refunite' in 2008. The app is a free platform for locating missing family members and maintains an anonymous database of over 405,000 users.

How this app works

People searching for lost family members are asked for information about the lost person, like their hometown or the school they attended. Users then receive information about possible matches via text messages, the app's website or even by calling a toll-free number.

It might be difficult to ascertain the exact number of people who have benefited from this platform. However, the non-profit organisation which runs this app says that on the basis of matched keywords and phone numbers, they have reconnected about 1,500 refugees so far. Another 100 to 150 are added each month.
