Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch: new specifications revealed to take on Apple and Fitbit

Speed News Desk | Updated on: 13 February 2017, 4:03 IST

Samsung is upping its smartwatch game by adding numerous juicy features to take on Apple and other smartwatch makers present in the market. The smartwatch will sport a circular face and more battery life than Apple. However, it is still unclear as to what all apps users will get in the smartwatch.

The limited apps could be one of the major drawback of Gear S2 if not sorted out at the earliest. Samsung smartwatches have been around for longer than Apple Watch but have failed to generate as much interest in the same.

Market statistics

Samsung S2 will not only face challenges from Apple but from other smartwatches which work on Google's Android Wear software. According to IDC, Apple was the No. 2 maker of wearable devices in the April-June quarter, with a 20 per cent worldwide market share, behind the Fitbit and its fitness trackers at 24 per cent. Samsung was fifth with 3.3 per cent.

Samsung smartwatch

App developers have been focusing on Apple Watch and Android Wear watches. The limited availability of apps for Samsung smartwatches could be attributed to the fact that Samsung uses its own operating system - Tizen in the smartwatches. It directly mean that extra work is to be done for the smartwatch.

The company has revealed that more apps will be demonstrated at IFA tech show in Berlin this year.

More details on S2

Style

The S2 will come in two styles -- classic and modern -- with various colors and bands.

Phone requirements

Just like Apple Watch requires an iPhone, Samsung Gear S2 will require an Android device from Samsung. It is said that few models will have 3G cellular capabilities . Reports are that 3G plans will cost extra and will not include a service plan, which is typically $5 to $10 a month in the US.

Battery life

Samsung says that S2 will offer a sturdy battery life ranging from 2-3 days than Apple's mere 18 hours battery life.
