Facebook is tweaking 'Trending Topics' following political bias allegations

Facebook has tweaked some of the procedures for its 'Trending Topics' category in the wake of a controversy of the topics being "politically biased".

Recently, social media users and news reports pointed out that Facebook was allegedly promoting certain news articles in its Trending Topics section. One such allegation came from a former Facebook contractor, who told Gizmodo that the company's editors were deliberately suppressing conservative news.

However, Facebook said that an internal probe showed no evidence of political bias in the selection of news stories for trending topics.

In a blogpost, the social media behemoth said that it was introducing certain changing that include including elimination of a top-ten list of approved websites, more training and clearer guidelines to help human editors avoid ideological or political bias, and more robust review procedures.
