No mention of Indian history at all in Tripura textbook (only Gandhi's views on cricket)

The Left Front government in Tripura makes no mention of the Indian freedom struggle at all in its class 9 textbook, except for a single reference to Mahatma Gandhi's views on cricket.

While the textbook includes the Russian and French revolutions, the birth of cricket in England, the history of agriculture, the rise of Adolf Hitler, the Santhal rebellion and the colonial attitude to tribals, there is nothing about Indian history, according to the Hindustan Times.

"Students are taught Karl Marx and Hitler but nothing about Indian freedom fighters," said a teacher.

The textbook was written by Kalyan Choudhury, former head of the history department in Kolkata's Maharaja Manindra Chandra College.

"We followed NCERT guidelines for the new history syllabus. Class 9 students used to study Indian history earlier," said Mihir Deb, president of the Tripura Board of Secondary Education. He denied that the board was pressured to prescribe the book by the Left government in Tripura.

Biplab Deb, president of the BJP's Tripura unit, said: "The Left Front wants to paint everything red, even if it means destroying the education system. They are brainwashing students with Marx and communism. This is a recipe for disaster."
