Cut-throat competition: Apple iPhone 4s priced equivalent to Micromax smartphones

In a bid to take on mid-ranged smartphones in the country, Apple has slashed the price of iPhone 4s. The phone is now priced at Rs 13,000.

Apple distributors made the price cut keeping in mind the cut-throat competition that the company is facing from indigenous players like Micromax and Chinese giant Xiaomi.

Interestingly, following the price cut, the sales of iPhone 4s have almost doubled in the past two weeks. The phone is also listed in the category of best selling smartphones on Amazon.in. The phone is being sold in the price range of Rs 12,000-14,000 on the website.

It is expected that the price cut will remain a short-lived phenomenon and will wither away soon. The price for iPhone 4s, of course, is highly competitive and will eat into the sales of other mid-range smartphones available in the country.

Apple caters to the super-premium group and this price cut is only for the phones which have to be cleared from the stock. This is a temporary phase. It will only have a short-term effect as Apple cannot sustain the price cut for a longer duration.

Apple has recently allowed the distributors to work on their margins, which would enable them to sell iPhones at competitive prices. This will also boost e-commerce sales.

Apple is craving for more iPhone sales this fiscal year. The company sold one million iPhones last fiscal.
