Tamil superstar Dhanush's Visaranai has been selected as the official entry for Oscars 2017 in the Foreign Language Film Category. The 89th Academy Award is scheduled to be held in February 2017 at Los Angeles. This is the first time a Tamil film has been selected for the competition category, which showcases the strength of Tamil films in world cinema.
Vetrimaran-directorial Visaranai was the 9th production venture of the Kolaveri actor. The film was an adaptation of M Chandrakumar's novel Lock Up, which showed the real police brutality in India. The film starred Dinesh Ravi, Samuthirakani, Kishore and Anandhi in lead roles and went on to bag three National Awards as well.
Visaranai is now the eighth Tamil film to be officially selected for Oscars after Jeans, Indian,Kurithipunal, Devar Magan, Anjali, Nayagan, Deiva Magan.
Supran Sen, the secretary general of Film Federation of India said that Visaranai was chosen from 29 contenders.
