Malayalam superstar Mammootty is back with a bang as his much-awaited Eid release, Kasaba set the Kerala Box Office on fire with a record breaking opening. The mass-masala entertainer, which had released on 7 July has taken an opening of Rs 2.45 crore on it's opening day. With this, the Mammootty-starrer emerges the all-time highest Malayalam opener by overtaking the record of Rs 2.33 crore set by his Kali, featuring son Dulquer Salmaan in the lead.

Mammootty's comeback to his best-loved avatar (a circle inspector) and the ongoing Eid holidays have worked wonders for the film. The film has been praised for the super entertaining first half and Mammooty's performance as circle inspector Rajan Zachariah. However, the film is also criticised for its below average second half.

Kasaba is the debut vehicle of Nithin Renji Panicker, the son of screenwriter-turned-actor Renji Panicker. It also marked the Mollywood debut of Kannada actresses Neha Saxena and Varalakshmi Sarath Kumar, the daughter of Tamil actor Sarath Kumar.
