It is widely known that the Kerala theatrical rights of the Rajinikanth-starrer Kabali have been acquired by the home banner of Malayalam superstar Mohanlal's Max Lab Cinemas and Entertainments, along with his producer-friend Antony Perumbavoor's Aashirvad Cinemas.

Kerala's Lalettan had bagged the rights of the Thalaiva film for a record price of Rs 8 crore and with this deal, Kabali beats the recently-released Vijay blockbuster Theri, to become the top non-Malayalam film to do so.

The rights of Theri were sold for Rs 5.60 crore to Vijay Babu's Friday Film House. Interestingly, both Kabali and Theri were produced by Kalaipuli S Thanu.

Meanwhile, Mohanlal is planning big with the Kerala rights of Kabali as the actor is planning to distribute the film in a record breaking 250 screens across his state. The previous record was held by Shankar - Vikram's I, which was released in 225 screens in Kerala. Mohanlal is planning to have as many as 8 shows of Kabali in a majority of screens, which means the opening day numbers of Kabali are sure to cross the highest non-Malayalam collection of Rs 3.30 crore set by Ilayathalapathy's Theri during Vishu 2016.

Kabali is touted as one of the most-awaited films of the year. The PA Ranjith-directorial is slated to hit the screens on 22 July, 2016, and is expected to set new records in Kerala, thanks to Kerala's Lalettan.
