JNU Row: Umar Khalid and Anirban rusticated for one semester by enquiry committee; fine imposed on Kanhaiya Kumar

A high-level committee of the Jawaharlal Nehru University administration has rusticated Phd student Umar Khalid accused of sedition for one semester and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on grounds of misconduct and indiscipline. The office order stated that he had not followed the university procedure for holding an event and had misinformed the university security about the permission of the pro- Afzal Guru event being granted. It has also imposed a Rs 10,000 fine on Kanhaiya Kumar.

As per the enquiry commission recommendation, both Anirban Bhattacharya and Umar have been found guilty of addressing to the group of students in a wrongfully organised event and being engaged in sloganeering. The order also said that they have also been found guilty of putting up objectionable posters and setting up a public addressing system at Sabarmati ground.

Anirban Bhattacharya has also been rusticated from the university till 15 July and is barred from applying to any course in the university for the next five years for violating disciplinary norms in connection with the 9 February pro-Afzal Guru event at the university.

Furthermore, the special enquiry committee has rusticated Mujeeb Gattoo for two semesters and prohibited Ashutosh Kumar's entry for one year into the JNU hostel.
