American BMX legend Dave Mirra, who held the record for the highest number of X Games medals until 2013, has passed away at the age of 41 after an apparent suicide.

Mirra, who was primarily a vert ramp and park rider, won a medal at every edition of X Games from 1995 to 2009.

On Thursday, 4 February, Mirra's body was found at his home in Greenville, North Carolina, with what looked like a self-inflicted gunshot to his head, the police informed reporters.

The legendary athlete, who had featured in the 2014 Race Across America Four-Person Male (Under 50) category winning team, had recently hosted 2 seasons of 'Real World/Road Rules Challenge' on MTV.

Mirra is survived by his wife and two children.
