CWG 2018: Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu clinches first Gold medal for India

The Indian campaign to conquer the world in games started today. After the opening ceremony witnessed a grand conclusion and the Indian contingent at the ceremony, consisting of over 200 athletes, led by flag-bearer and ace shuttler PV Sindhu, the Rio Olympic silver medallist. The squad also included double Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar, and London Olympic bronze medallists Mary Kom, Saina Nehwal and ace shooter Gagan Narang.

 

India has won its first gold medal in the 48-kg weightlifting category. Mira bai Chanu has made the feat . This medal comes as no surprise to the Indian supporters as Mira Bai Chanu is over 10Kgs ahead of her next best opponent in the event.


However, the first day of the games has seen a bright start for the Indian campaign. Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has set a new Commonwealth record in the 48-kg weight category. India has opened its medals tally on the very first day with a silver medal in the 56-kg weightlifting category.
