Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg started off his Formula One season on a winning note as he edged past team-mate Lewis Hamilton to seal the Australian Grand Prix on Sunday.

The 30-year-old German was eight seconds quicker than three-time world champion Hamilton, who started the race at the pole position, Sport24 reported.

It was his fourth straight Grand Prix victory and 15th overall after seeing off Hamilton in the final three races of 2015.

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel, who started the race faster than the Mercedes duo before needing a tyre change on lap 36, completed the podium at the third spot ahead of local hero Daniel Ricciardo and Felipe Massa.

The season-opening race also saw McLaren's Fernando Alonso walking away from a horrifying crash while Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari catching fire.

With the win, Mercedes have won 33 of their previous 39 races.
