Nirbhaya case: SC dismisses curative petitions, convicts to be hanged on January 22

The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday (January 14) rejected curative petitions of two convicts--Vinay Sharma and Mukesh Kumar, of the sensational 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case.

The order was pronounced five-judge bench of the SC comprising Justices NV Ramana, Arun Mishra, RF Nariman, R Banumathi and Ashok Bhushan.

" This is a big day for me. I had been struggling for the last 7 years. But the biggest day will be January 22, when they (convicts) will be hanged," Asha Devi, the victim's mother told to ANI.

On January 7, a Delhi court had ordered the four convicts of the 2012 gang-rape and murder case death sentence. the four will be hanged on January 22 at 7 am in Tihar jail, the Delhi court said.

Earlier, the court had dismissed a plea filed by the father of one of the convicts, who had questioned the credibility of the sole witness by claiming that he was 'tutored' and sought the registration of FIR against him.

On December 20, 2019, the court had reserved the order on an application filed by Pawan Kumar Gupta's father till today.

Besides Pawan Kumar Gupta, three others - Akshay, Vinay, and Mukesh are facing the gallows in the case.

The main accused, Ram Singh, allegedly committed suicide in Tihar Jail during the trial. Another accused was a minor at the time of the commission of the crime and was sent to a reform facility and released after three years.
