Senior Congress leader, Captain Amarinder Singh revealed that he had planned to quit Congress and start his own political party in Punjab.

During an interview with NDTV, Amarinder Singh asserted that he had been on the verge of leaving Congress and had informed his decision to quit the party to Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi.

Captain Amarinder said that his intent was to only keep Akali BJP out of Punjab and he had informed Rahul Gandhi that if they were not capable of keeping them at bay, he would leave the party and fight his own battle.

He also said that the ground realities of Punjab were not clearly understood in Delhi. Additionally, regional leaders are not given enough freedom to function in the state.

Singh also affirmed that the upcoming Punjab Assembly election would be his last election campaign as he wants to clear the path for the younger generation.
