After emerging the main opposition party in West Bengal with 44 seats in the 294-member Assembly, the newly-elected Congress legislators on 24 May gave a written declaration on stamp paper that they will not leave the party.

A party leader said that the declaration was given on non-judicial stamp papers valued at Rs.100.

The lawmakers pledged their "unqualified allegiance" to the Congress in the affidavit to the party president Sonia Gandhi.

"All the 44 elected members of the party have taken a unanimous decision that they would not leave the party under any circumstances and indulge in anti-party activities. We have given a written declaration on stamp papers," IANS quoted senior West Bengal Pradesh Congress leader Abdul Mannan.

He added that the legislators will go by the party decisions and not make any anti-party remarks.

"No one was forced or directed to give the declaration," the leader added.
