Uttar Pradesh: Dalit man was forced to drink urine, assaulted by the upper caste after he refused to harvest crops; four held

A Dalit man registered a complaint alleging he was assaulted and humiliated by four upper caste men of his village in Badaun, Uttar Pradesh. The Dalit man named Sitaram Valmiki of Azampur Bisauriya village alleged that four-man from his villages had attacked him and forced him to drink urine after I refused to harvest their field.

Valmiki said, “On the evening of April 23, I was working in my field when these four men arrived. They abused me and asked why I had not harvested their field. I told them I would do their work once I completed work on my field. They abused me and kicked me, dragged me to the village, tied me to a tree, pulled out the hairs of my moustache and humiliated me.”

A day after Dalit man's complaint Uttar Pradesh SC/ST Commission on Monday wrote to additional director-general (ADG), Bareilly zone, and directed him to send the inspector general of police (IG), Bareilly range, to the spot.

According to report, the commission also asked the ADG to take action against police officers if any evidence of carelessness was found in their conduct.

Brijlal, chairperson of the commission wrote to ADG, Bareilly zone, Prem Prakash, and said that “it is a highly sensitive matter”. “I have directed you to send IG, Bareilly range, to the spot for inspection, take action against the accused and enhance the security of the victim’s family. Also, if the police were responsible for any lapse, take action against the official and inform the commission about it,” said Brijlal.

After which four men were held on Monday by the cops. The four accused men named — Vijay Singh, Pinku Singh, Vikram Singh and Shailendra Singh all residents of the Azampur Visauriya village

A case was lodged at the Hazratpur police station under Sections 308, 342, 332, 504 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code. Relevant sections of the SC/ST Act were also evoked, the Badaun police said.
DK Thakur, IG, Bareilly range who visited Azampur Bisauriya village on Monday told TOI, “I have directed the investigating officer to a re-conduct medical examination of the victim to confirm whether the hairs of his moustache were pulled out or not. We are investigating whether Valmiki was humiliated in any other form or not.’’
