In the political battleground during the winter session of parliament, the Triple Talaq bill was tabled and during a healthy debate, the Congress and Trinamool are demanding for a standing committee.

BJP, on the other hand, is demanding for an equal right for the women and has invoked the fact that most of the countries including the Islamic nations have demolished the practice and made it criminal.

Leader of the Opposition, Mallikarjun Kharge, has said that “This is a very important bill which needs detailed study. It is also a constitutional matter. I request the bill be sent to joint select committee.”

The bill was earlier passed by the Lok Sabha but the Opposition parties stalled it in Rajya Sabha. Thereafter, the BJP had passed an ordinance regarding the Triple Talaq and now, again the discussion over the bill is happening, and the Congress party is demanding to send the bill to Standing Committee. Also, the Bill has been openly opposed by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board.

Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has said, “This bill is not against any community, religion or belief. This bill is for the rights of women and about justice.”

Prasad added that “20 Islamic nations have banned Triple Talaq, then why can't a secular nation like India? I request that this should not be looked through the prism of politics.”

TMC leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay has said in the Parliament that, “We also request the Triple Talaq Bill be sent to joint select committee, all opposition is of the same opinion.”
