To break GST deadlock, PM Modi invites Manmohan and Sonia to 'chai pe charcha'

In order to break the deadlock over the passage of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) bill, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today invited Congress President Sonia Gandhi and former prime minister Manmohan Singh for 'chai pe charcha' at his residence.

The GST bill has been at the forefront of economic reform for the current government but the opposition has demanded amendments in some key areas of the bill.

On 26 November, Tariq Anwar of the NCP had said, "We support the GST bill but the government should look into the amendments suggested by the opposition."

The GST bill needs two-thirds majority in Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha to be passed and is now stuck in Rajya Sabha.

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati had earlier expressed support for the GST bill. She said that the government had assured that the bill would strengthen the economy.
