On 2 August, the West Bengal Cabinet decided to rename the state as Bangla or Bongo.
Trinamool Congress leader Partha Chatterjee confirmed that the Cabinet will now forward the proposal to the Centre, which will take the final decision.
The West Bengal government is reportedly taking this move to resolve the issue of the state's name being placed last "alphabetically". According to reports, state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had also taken up the issue last month during the Inter-State Council meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Earlier, the West Bengal government had decided to rename West Bengal as "Paschimbanga" in 2011 to raise the state's position alphabetically. CPM had also extended its support to Trinamool Congress at the time.
