Congress' Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor has appeared before a Delhi's Patiala House Court today in connection with wife Sunanda Pushkar death case. The Patiala House court granted him the bail by converting anticipatory bail to a regular bail after Mr Tharoor furnished the bail bond of Rs 1 lakh.

The Patiala House Cout Judge while granting bail said "not required to file a formal bail application as anticipatory bail had been granted by the sessions court," reported news agency ANI.

Public prosecutor & Shashi Tharoor's counsel opposed the applications moved by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, seeking the court's permission to allow him to assist the prosecution in the case and sought a report of vigilance inquiry conducted earlier.

Today, the Delhi police and counsel for accused said my position is not maintainable, I argued it under section 302 CrPc, I am entitled. The question of maintainability is irrelevant. I am here to see that trial is fair and Delhi Police does not botch it, said, S Swamy

Counsels for Shashi Tharoor questioned Subramanian Swamy's locus standi in the case. Court set 26th July as the date for the scrutiny of documents and consideration of the application.

The Delhi Police had named Shashi Tharoor as an accused in the case and charged him under IPC sections 498 (A) (husband or his relative subjecting a woman to cruelty) and 306 (abetment to suicide) in a charge sheet filed on May 14. However, Mr Tharoor is the only person named as an accused in the 3,000-page charge sheet.

According to the charge-sheet quotes a special investigation team as stating that Congress MP Shashi Tharoor " as a husband ignored Sunanda when she was sliding or slipping into depression and she had Alprax." They had frequent fights, it says.

Pushkar killed herself by consuming an overdose of antidepressant pills, alprazolam (Alprax), and was driven to taking the extreme step by her husband.
