Six months after he took charge as the Home Secretary, LC Goyal has sought voluntary retirement. The Prime Minister's office has confirmed that Goyal has been replaced by Rajiv Mehrishi, the former Finance Secretary.

There is no confirmation on why Goyal sought retirement. The tenure of Home Secretary usually lasts for two years.

LC Goyal took over as Home Secretary in February this year. His predecessor Anil Goswami was asked to leave, for his alleged attempt to stall the arrest of Saradha scam accused, Matang Sinh by CBI.

Goyal, a 1979-batch IAS officer of Kerala cadre, was the Rural Development Secretary till before he was appointed the Home Secretary.
