These words spoken by Rajiv Gandhi in the aftermath of the 1984 anti Sikh-riots have remained a blot on the career of the former prime minister.
Jab bhi koi bada per girta hai, to dharti thori hilti hai (Whenever, a big tree falls, the earth shakes a little)
-Rajiv Gandhi, after the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
But why is this statement making headlines again 30-odd years after it was uttered? Sikh leaders of the BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have released a video of Gandhi uttering these words. Up until now, there was no video evidence of the statement available.
The video was released by AAP leader and senior advocate HS Phoolka and BJP leader RP Singh during a press conference in the national capital. The reason why the video assumes significance is the fact that there was no social media or camera-enabled phones to record this back then.
Only Doordarshan had recordings of speeches. However, BJP leader Singh and Phoolka alleged that this particular video had been deleted from the records and archives of Doordarshan. Phoolka said that it was not easy to retrieve the deleted video. The video has now been uploaded on Youtube.
