Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation today as he announced India entering the elite list of countries to have an ‘Anti-Satellite’ missile also known as A-SAT. India became the fourth country in the world to have the technology after United States of America, Russia and China. Prime Minister Modi’s announcement came days before the commencement of Lok Sabha election.

Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan reacted to the development as he took to his official Twitter account to congratulate Modi and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Dhawan wrote, “Great achievement for our country as we become the fourth nation in the world to acquire the capability of the Anti-Satellite Missile System. Congratulations to @isro and @narendramodi for #MissionShakti Proud moment!”

The missile test was conducted by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on March 27 and the exercise was termed as ‘Mission Shakti’. PM Modi also added that, “Mission Shakti operation was a difficult target to achieve which was completed successfully within three minutes of launch.”

“India has shot down a low-orbit satellite, I congratulate all the scientists of the DRDO,” Modi said, referring to India’s premier defence technology establishment, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

While India had the technology to shoot down Low Earth Orbit (LEO) for some time but demonstrating the capability with Mission Shakti was a good move by PM Modi, G Madhavan Nair former chief of ISRO told NDTV.
