The Supreme Court on 19 June 2017 issued a notice to the Central Government and the Medical Council of India (MCI) after hearing a petition by the Maulana Jauhar University challenging the council's decision of non-grant of permission to establish a medical college.

The apex court has sought their response within three weeks.

The petition has sought the permission of medical courses.

The trust managing the University, Jauhar Trust, has alleged that due process wasn't followed while rejecting its request.

Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan is also one of the trustees in the Jauhar Trust.

Khan established the university in 2013 in Uttar Pradesh's Rampur.

The University had sought permission from the Central Government and MCI for the medical course this year.

On May 31, the Central Government refused to allow medical courses on the basis of the recommendation of the MCI.
