On 23 September, the Supreme Court upheld the conviction of former Haryana DGP SPS Rathore in the the Ruchika Girhotra molestation case.
However, in a relief for him, the apex court also reduced his sentence from one and half years to the sentence already served, which is six months.
So essentially, while Rathore will not go to jail, the taint of conviction stays with him.
On 20 August, 1990, Rathore, who was also the president of the Haryana Lawn Tennis Association (HLTA) at the time, had molested 14-year-old Ruchika Girhotra, a budding tennis player.
The incident took place in the HLTA office in Panchkula.
After the incident, Ruchika was expelled from school on grounds of 'indiscipline' following her allegations against Rathore.
Ruchika ended her life on 28 December, 1993, by consuming poison.
