Right wing activists at Bhopal's Barkatullah University assaulted a Kashmiri research scholar on Wednesday in retaliation against the unrest in Jammu and Kashmir. This is the second such incident in three days.

A group of about 10 men shouting 'Bharat mata ki jai' and 'Jai Shri Ram' attacked Sajjad Ahmed, a PhD scholar, at a crowded place where he was photocopying an assignment. Eye witnesses said no one came to his rescue, according to the Hindustan Times.

"The assailants also tried to blacken the student's face," said a witness.

According to Ahmed, his attackers told him that the assault was their "response" to the unrest in Kashmir, which has seen continuing protests against the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen militant Burhan Wani by security forces on 8 July.

Right wing activist Sushil Sodale said: "Our attacks will continue if they don't stop the turmoil in Kashmir."

On Monday, Kashmiri PhD student Umar Rashid had been assaulted for the same reason when he mentioned that he was from Pampore in Kashmir. However, the university administration had dismissed the incident.
