A police station in Secunderabad was ransacked by a mob of around 500 people ransacked on Monday, 3 August, after the death of a man who had earlier been detained in connection with a scuffle.

Bannappa was brought to the Marredpally police station in an inebriated state following a scuffle on Sunday evening when the Telangana festival, Bonalu, was being celebrated. A police officer said Bannappa was later sent away.

Bannappa, however, died on Monday, after which the residents of his locality ransacked the Marredpally police station alleging the police was responsible for his death.

The mob pulled out computers, documents and first information reports from the police station and set them on fire right outside its building.

Security around the police station was increased by the police following the incident and the situation was brought under control. Deputy Commissioner of Police, North Zone, Prakash Reddy, said the policemen did not fight with the mob.

Hyderabad Police Commissioner Mahender Reddy said an investigation has been ordered into the incident.

The police is also studying CCTV footage from in and around the police station.
