After the UAE deported three Indian men on Thursday on charges that they were recruiting for ISIS (Islamic State), the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested Adnan Damudi on Friday, reports The Indian Express.

Damudi is a major catch for the NIA, who said that he, along with the other two men deported by the UAE, was involved in a "conspiracy to identify, motivate, radicalise, recruit and train Indian citizens located both in India and other countries for planning and executing terrorist attacks in India and in other friendly countries".

Last year, Damudi under the alias Adnan Hussain Mohammed Hussain, allegedly attempted to influence four young men from Hyderabad into travelling to Syria.

The other two men deported by the UAE are Sheikh Azhar Al Islam Abdul Sattar Sheikh from Jammu and Kashmir, and Mohammed Farhan Mohammed Rafiq Shaikh from Mumbra. When the three men landed in Delhi on Thursday, they were interrogated by the NIA and formally arrested by the NIA. They will be produced in an NIA special court on Saturday. They have been charged for criminal conspiracy under the Indian Penal Code and for recruitment for terrorist activities under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, 1967.

Bhatkal, Karnataka-based Damudi, 34, trained as an accountant and worked as a delivery coordinator at the World Trade Centre in Dubai when he moved to the Gulf in 2012. Later, he allegedly began acting as recruiter and propaganda agent for the IS. His online activities were tracked by Indian intelligence agencies. The UAE detained him in September 2015.
