Najma A Heptulla governor of poll-bound Manipur; 3 other governors, LG announced

The Narendra Modi-led Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) government on 17 August appointed new governors for Assam, Punjab and Manipur and a Lieutenant Governor for Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

1. Jagdish Mukhi appointed as Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Mukhi has been a former minister of Finance, Planning, Excise and Taxation and Higher Education in the Delhi government. He has been associated with the RSS and won the Vidhan Sabha elections seven consecutive times since 1980, until he lost in 2014 by 25,000 votes against AAP leader Rajesh Rishi.

Mukhi has been awarded twice with the best MLA award in Delhi Vidhan Sabha.

2. Banwarilal Purohit appointed Governor of Assam, replaces Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya

Purohit has been MP from Nagpur (Lok Sabha constituency) three times, twice as a Congress member, once as a BJP member.

He joined Bharatiya Janata Party when the party launched the movement to build the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, and contested Lok Sabha elections in 1991 as the party's candidate. He lost to Datta Meghe of Congress.

In 1996, he was elected to the 11th Lok Sabha as BJP's candidate. In 2009, he again contested on BJP's ticket but lost the election to Vilas Muttemwar of Congress.

3. VP Singh Badnore replaces Kaptan Singh Solanki as Governor of Punjab

Badnore is a BJP leader from Rajasthan, who recently completed a term in the Rajya Sabha and has held various positions in the government.

He was a member of Rajasthan Legislative Assembly from 1977-80, 1985-90, 1993-98 and 1998-99. Badnore was also the Cabinet Minister for Irrigation, Government of Rajasthan during 1998-99. 2012 onwards, he was a member of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Security in Parliament House Complex.

Badnore has held several other positions in his political carrier.

4. Najma A Heptulla replaces V Shanmuganthan as Governor of Manipur

Heptullah who will be the 18th Governor of Manipur, resigned from the Union Ministry on 12 July, 2016, as she had crossed 75 years of age. The five-time member of the Rajya Sabha between 1986 and 2012 is also a former vice president of the BJP and deputy chairman of the Rajya Sabha for 16 years. She was nominated by the BJP for the Rajya Sabha in 2012 from Madhya Pradesh, and assumed office on 24 April, 2012.

Heptulla also contested the 13th vice presidential election held in August 2007 but lost to Hamid Ansari by 233 votes.
