My Study-My Opinion-My Right: How does astrology affect election results?

Shweta V. Bhardwaj | Updated on: 2 April 2017, 11:02 IST

The Election Commission's latest directive to the news channels to avoid using astrologers and other occult science practices for prediction of poll results has come as a shock to me. However, with due respect to the law, I don’t agree with it this time.

Gone are those days when astrologers were perceived as people with “poor logics”. Holding a Masters degree in Computer Application, I believe and support logic behind every prediction that I do or any remedies I suggest.

Contradictory to the allegations, when we predict, we don’t represent “mass” opinion. You will never find any occult science expert saying, “after consulting 100 people, I predict that XYZ party will win the election.”

What we actually say is “according to my study on the charts and planet position, I predict that stars will favour XYZ party."

Predictions are based on static data, like date of birth details, party formation date etc. and hence the predictions are not affected by the time when the prediction is done (a variable). So, I'm not sure on what basis my study during the prohibits time actually affects or influences the election result.

Moreover, my way of study and results could be different from my fellow astrologer. So, does it mean that we will have 2 CMs or PMs at the same time?

My prediction is my own study and opinion without being influenced by any element. The right of speech and expression, right to have a political opinion is given to me by my country’s constitution. While everyone has the free will to disagree, no one can snatch the rights away from me.

Having said that, I unquestionably condemn any astrologer or occult science expert of being “influenced/ in favour” to any party. This is absolutely wrong and being unfaithful to the profession.

Adding to the aforementioned point, I would like to highlight that most political representatives use phrases like, “Jeet rahe hain hum (we are winning), Is baar XYZ sarkar (ABC party this time)” and so on during their campaigns, press releases, speeches. I think this is where “mass representation” comes into play as the words influence the voters way more than a personal opinion or study.

Needless to say, “You may stop the new content but the previous content doesn't disappear from the internet when EC starts the Prohibit time. The content stays and actually flows to millions of voters.”

In my opinion, rather than banning a particular community to express their views and opinion, EC should monitor the use of power, money, liquor etc. that actually influence the results. For a safer side, we can simply use one “viewer discretion” note for exit polls. Because politics is in each one of us, and talking about it actually strengthen it to the core.
