Mumbai: 74-year-old man dials ‘fake’ RBI number to change demonetized notes, loses Rs 48,000; case filed

In another fraud case, an old man, in his mid-70s was dubbed after he called up wrong or ‘Fake’ “Reserve Bank of India (RBI) helpline” that he Google to exchange Demonetized currency. The 74-year-old Mumbai resident Vijay Kumar Marwa was frauded of worth Rs 48,000.

As per reports in HT, Mr Marwa found Rs 7,000 in demonetized currency last month while cleaning his home. He wanted to get it exchanged following which he searched for the RBI helpline number on his mobile phone. He called one of the RBI helpline number that showed up. Unfortunately, the contact number was fake and end up loosing Rs 48,000.


The Fraudster promised him to deposit the notes in the RBI office and asked Marwa for his bank details to deposit the money to the account. As per HT reports, the man obtained the credit card details, along with the one-time password (OTP), and within minutes transferred Rs 48,000 from Marwa’s bank account.

Later, Marwa realised that he has been duped and approached the Malad police station. An FIR was filed on January 6. This, according to experts, is vishing, where fraudsters, posing as financial institutions, put up their numbers online.
