While addressing a meeting of the District Vigilance Committee in Pilibhit on 23 April, Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi cited the example of Sonia Gandhi, her estranged sister-in-law and Congress president, lauding her efforts to combat corruption.

During a discussion on corruption in schools, Maneka Gandhi narrated a story of how Sonia Gandhi had taken action to stop her name from being misused. According to an Indian Expressreport, an official at the meeting pointed out that certain schools, which had been granted recognition only for junior classes, were running classes for higher standards as well, by bribing 'babus'. He also informed her that he did not have the authority to take action against them.

Maneka Gandhi then recalled an incident when a relative of Sonia Gandhi started a business by using her name to draw costumers. Sonia Gandhi had then issued advertisements and notifications in newspapers, urging people to refrain from availing of his services.

Maneka Gandhi asked the officials in her Lok Sabha constituency of Pilibhit to take a cue from this incident and work towards preventing corruption. She suggested that notices be displayed directing people to get in touch with the Basic Siksha Adhikari Ambrish Kumar to get recognition for their schools. She also directed that CCTV cameras be installed in office rooms to facilitate smoother functioning of affairs in the education department.
