The polls held on June 11 in Bengaluru's Jayanagar constituency in Karnataka, the grand old party Congress has defeated Amit Shah led BJP with a huge margin of votes. The Congress has got 46 per cent of votes in the polls, while BJP got 33.2 per cent. Congress has defeated BJP by over 3,000 votes.

The Assembly elections across Karnataka were held on May 12, but polling in Jayanagar in south Bengaluru was deferred because of the death of BJP candidate BN Vijayakumar. Around 55 per cent polling was recorded in the constituency on June 11.

In the Jayanagar polls, BJP has fielded Mr Vijayakumar's brother BN Prahlad and the Congress candidate is a senior leader and former minister Ramalinga Reddy's daughter Sowmya Reddy. Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy's JDS pulled out its candidate and formally backed its coalition partner Congress.

This is the first poll that the Janata Dal-Secular (JDS) and Congress have fought on the same side since they formed an alliance to take power following a fractured verdict. Congress and JDS joined hands to form a government in Karnataka together and to bar BJP to come in power.

Congress nominated JDS' CM candidate, HD Deve Gowda's son HD Kumaraswamy as their Chief Minister pick. Mr Kumaraswamy was sworn in on May 24, after the BJP, which emerged as single largest party step down before facing the floor test.
