Speed News Desk | Updated on: 10 February 2017, 1:50 IST

A gunfight broke out in the frontier district of Kupwara between militants and security forces during a search operation on 21 May, ANI reported.

According to reports, troops of 47 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police launched a joint search operation at Drugmulla village in the northern Kashmir district of Kupwara following a tip-off about the presence of militants.

However, when the security forces were moving towards the particular area, militants hiding there opened fire with automatic weapons. The troops retaliated and a fierce encounter ensued. Following the encounter, additional security forces were rushed to the spot.

Last month, there were reports that about eight militants had infiltrated into India from Pakistan-occupied- Kashmir (PoK). However, three of them were killed while another was arrested alive in the district.

Further details are awaited.
