A Union Home Ministry report has indicated that Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav and three former chief ministers will lose their NSG security cover as they "don't need them".
According to a Hindustan Times report, the home ministry report suggested that the NSG cover is totally based on threat perception and it has now become a status symbol for politicians.
Akhilesh Yadav, apart from former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, former Tamil Nadu CM M Karunanidhi and former Assam CM Tarun Gogoi could now be protected by a paramilitary force.
According to the report, 15 politicians are currently under NSG protection including senior BJP leader LK Advani, home minister Rajnath Singh and Congress' Ghulam Nabi Azad, who is also the leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha.
The final approval on the outcome of the protection review meeting will be taken by Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
