The self-styled godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has been convicted of raping two women by the court on 25 August. Soon after the verdict was announced, Haryana got enveloped in violence as protesters burned down buses. The violent clashes have claimed 31 lives.

The statement of the two victims 'sadhvis' has come as a major shock to many.

According to media reports, the victims, before the judges, gave a detailed account of how they were treated at the 'ashrams'. The two women, reportedly, informed the court that they were raped in a 'gufa' which was an underground chamber for Ram Rahim.

A report in the Times of India claimed that "only female disciples were deployed to guard Ram Rahim's underground living quarters. 'Maafi' (Pardon) was the code word used among disciples to describe rapes."

The statement of one of the victims to CBI judge A K Verma on February 28, 2009, has unveiled some extremely disturbing facts.

"I did not understand when other female disciples used to ask me if I had been 'granted maafi by pitaji' until I was raped by Gurmeet on August 28/29 1999, inside the gufa," TOI quoted Sadhvi's statement.

Ram Rahim Singh had threatened the victims not to reveal the crime to anyone.
