EVM Hacking: Election Commission rubbishes charges of EVM hacking in 2014 polls; will take legal action
In a major setback, an Indian ‘cyber expert’ on Monday claimed that EVMs were hacked during 2014 Lok Sabha elections, in which the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) had a big win and dethroned Congress from power in Centre. Responding on the ‘EVM hacking’ allegations Election Commission has rushed the claims and maintained that machines were foolproof.
Following the row, the Election Commission also said that it was mulling legal action in response to the claims made by a person identified as Syed Suja at a press conference in London, reported Indian Express. Syed Suja had claimed that in 2014 Lok Sabha Elections ‘EVMs were hacked.
“It has come to our notice that an event claiming to demonstrate EVMs used by ECI can be tampered with, has been organized in London. ECI has been wary of becoming a party to this motivated slugfest and stands by empirical facts about the foolproof nature of ECI EVMs,” the Election Commission said.
EC also said that EVMs used in elections were manufactured by Bharat Electronics and Electronics Corporation of India under “very strict supervisory and security conditions”.
“EVMs are manufactured in Bharat Electronics Ltd. and Electronics Corporation of India Ltd. under very strict supervisory and security conditions. There are rigorous Standard Operating Procedures observed under the supervision of a Committee of technical experts constituted in 2010,” the commission said.
