Delhi police on Tuesday arrested a 35-year-old man on charges of raping a three-and-half-year-old girl.
The accused - identified as Birbal - dumped the girl in a deep pit after raping her. The incident took place on 21 November around 8 pm when the accused lured the victim with a toffee. The girl's parents had gone out, leaving their three children at home. The victim was playing outside her house when the accused spotted her.
According to media reports, Birbal took the girl to a deserted place and allegedly raped her near Anand Parbat area.
Reportedly, the accused is known to be a neighbour of the victim, and was arrested by the police from his residence in Harijan Basti, North Delhi. Birbal has been booked by police under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 (Posco) at Sarai Rohilla Police Station.
"Birbal dumped the girl in six-feet-deep pit as he saw her unconscious, thinking she had died, and fled the spot," IANS quoted Deputy Commissioner of Police Madhur Verma as saying.
"Birbal confessed to his crime during interrogation and told the police about the location where he had dumped the victim. Police found the girl alive with injury marks. She was admitted to a nearby hospital in critical condition," the DCP added.
