The Congress on 12 May ridiculed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Virendra Singh's remark that lawmakers of drought-hit states should perform 'yagya' as a means to mitigate the drought situation. The Congress also said that the centre should accept its failure.

"I don't believe in all these things. I am a Hindu and I worship, but I don't believe in all these things. The government should accept its failure. The way the Supreme Court pulled up the government and said that the government was not ready to tackle the drought situation," Congress leader Pramod Tewari told ANI.

BJP MP Virendra Singh on 12 May suggested that people should organise 'yagyas' as a means to mitigate drought like situation and purify the nature. "There are spiritual as well as scientific reasons for 'yagya'. It helps in attracting clouds," he told ANI.

Over 40 per cent the country is facing water scarcity and dipping under drought like situation. "I can say this very confidently that the regions facing drought will get rains if they conduct 'yagya'," Singh told ANI.

His remark came after the Supreme Court directed the Centre to convene an urgent meeting with their chief secretaries to assess the drought situation in Haryana, Gujarat and Bihar.
