The retirement age of doctors employed in the Central Health Service (CHS) will now be 65 years, up from the existing 62 years, it was announced on 27 September.

The decision will be implemented retrospectively from 31 May 2016.

A total of 1,445 doctors of various ministries and departments of the central government would benefit from the cabinet decision.

"We should see the move from the perspective of enhancement of patient care availability," Law and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad told reporters.
